Facebook Featured Fan Announced: John Abrams

I can not begin to tell you how SUPER excited I am to present this week's featured fan, John Abrams. John has had a HUGE impact on my business through his Rebel Entertainers blog and programs.
Yes, he is on the other side of the country and I have yet to meet him in person but that is the beauty of the information age. Thank the good Lord for the internet!  While John is currently on a hiatus from Rebel Entertainers, his Rebel Entertainers blog is still out there in cyber space and, thankfully, is stuffed with all kinds of fabulous information for a performer ready to take things to the next level. John is busy, busy, busy performing around 500 shows this year! John has impacted my marketing, my performing, my show writing (I'll be using his course to assemble my upcoming show) AND he has been just in general, super encouraging - I am blessed to be able to include him as one of my mentors.
This past year, when I was completely overwhelmed by some of the amazing local talent in the area, John took the time out of his busy schedule to encourage me and give me the best advice ever. With his permission, I would like to share it with you in case you, also, need that kind of encouragement.

John Abrams Encouraging Quote: "You have something that none of them do. You are YOU. You are unique and have something unique to offer. ....and there really is enough business to go around. You just have to go after it. Go for it and have lots of fun."

This one statement was a game changer for me and has shaped my confidence and my business since. I pray it assists you - whether you are a performer or not, it is true in every industry.

Thanks, John!

Enjoy reading about John and be sure to comment on the most interesting thing you learned about John. Apparently, the man is part fish. : )
========================

Are you a dog or a cat person? No contest! I love me some dogs. As a kid I was raised breeding and showing Golden Retrievers and Shelties. In fact, my own dog Bittimin Jones has his own face book page. We go hiking all the time. He’s hilarious!

What is your favorite pizza topping? Hmmm.. That’s a tough one. I really don’t prefer an single topping. I like the “All Meat Everything On It” type of pizza.

Did you play sports or a band instrument in high school(what activities did you participate in - doesn't have to be associated with school)?  I was a Nationally Ranked Swimmer as a kid. That pretty much dominated my life until my late teens when I got into drama...and girls. I suppose that’s a one-two punch that’ll knock out about any other activity.

What do you think came first, the chicken or the egg?  Egg. I love eggs.

Tell us about your family. Married 20 years to my beautiful wife Shelley. Have two daughters. Juna is going to Bath Spa University in the U.K. and Lily goes to Orange County High School of The Arts. I brag way too much about my kids, so I won’t bore you with all the details, but they’re both super talented and overachievers in their specialties.

What would you like readers to know about you personally? I’m a chocoholic. I love “So You Think You Can Dance” AND “The Ultimate Fighter”. I like live musical theater AND boxing. I am a bit of an Amateur Boxing Historian. Does anybody else like those combinations? Also, I just finished the P90X exercise program.

What is your business? What "do you do?" My main job is performing educational magic shows for kids. My Amazing School Assemblies (the name of my business) include “The Bully Game”, “Random Acts of Character” , “Animal Magic” and more. I also inspire other entertainers to follow their dreams with Entertainer Coaching.

What is the best part of your job?  First, I am blessed to do something that I love to do. I get to inspire 1000s of children and at the same time have a fantastically fun time! The kids crack me up. If I have fun, they have fun. And we do.

Who is your greatest supporter in your life and work? My wife and my daughters.

Who or what inspires you? Kids.

Is there something you are really passionate about? What is it? See above.

What is your favorite quote? “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible” - Walt Disney

What is your favorite magic trick?  There are a few. I guess the favorite that I do doesn’t have a name. Here’s how it looks: I pour some Snapple in a glass, then magically and visibly it turns into a LIVE TARANTULA. It gets crazy screams every time.

How cute is Chili? Hot after an outdoor
show, John invited him to sit in
the front seat on the way home.
Do you have a favorite animal that you enjoy using in your shows?  Definitely my Chinchilla. Very cute.

In what areas of the US do you perform? Mainly Southern California. Although I do take an occasional stint to Las Vegas.

Facebook Featured Fan Announced: Steven Simpson

When I received this week's responses and pictures for the upcoming feature fan, the picture above immediately became my favorite.  What do you think?

Steven is the pastor of a church that is only blocks down the street from my home. He and his staff always make me feel welcome when visiting their church which, by the way, provides meeting space for a TON of community organizations. This church does a fantastic job of serving the local community.

I don't believe I have ever seen Pastor Steven without a smile. He has been a wonderful encourager to me on my Facebook Page as well as in my balloon skills. He's the man who asked for Goliath (see picture below)!

I enjoyed reading his answers and I'm sure you will too. Happy reading and have a fantastic weekend!

=============================
Are you a dog or a cat person?
I’m definitely a dog person. We have a chocolate lab named “Levi” and a black rescue dog named “Statia.” The tribe of Levi in the Bible was given charge of guarding the Temple and carrying out priestly functions. The name Statia comes from “Anastatia” (on-a-STAH-shuh) which means resurrection in Greek. Levi and Statia have completely different personalities.

What is your favorite pizza topping?

I like variety, including pineapples, Canadian bacon, roasted red peppers, and even anchovies on occasion, but I most often choose mushrooms and sausage and never pepperoni.

Did you play sports or a band instrument in high school?

In third grade I was given a choice of several band instruments (flute, trumpet, saxophone, or trombone), but I didn’t join the band because they didn’t offer banjo. My musical side lay dormant for many years.

In high school I was on the football, wrestling, and track teams and did a little bit of choir and theatre. I also enjoyed skiing and biking.

Later in life I did pick up the banjo, along with guitar, bass, mandolin, and ukulele. Lately I’ve been learning to play Sweet Georgia Brown (the Globetrotters’ theme) on my tenor ukulele while whistling the melody. I’m a big fan of bluegrass, Celtic, and jazz music, including the string-based gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt.

What do you think came first, the chicken or the egg?

I believe God created chickens which in turn produced eggs. I, in turn, like to create omelets.

What would you like readers to know about you personally?

My greatest joy and privilege is to know Jesus and to follow him and to share him with others.

What is your business? What "do you do?"

I follow Jesus (not always very well), and I try to help others do the same. And I get paid to do it because I’m a pastor serving with the people of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Amityville (near the DB Middle School).

Who is your greatest supporter in your life and work?

Well, God is, or I wouldn’t last a day. But the main person God works through to support me is my wife, Shannon. I thank God for her.

Who or what inspires you?

I’m inspired by people who have been shaped by their relationship with God and who continue to accept the cost and joy of discipleship.

What do you do for fun?

My wife, Shannon, and I love to go out dancing. We do salsa, swing, ballroom, and tango. Dancing is good for the heart…and it’s good for the “heart,” if you know what I mean. : )

What do you do to relax?

Play music, read, and garden.

What is your favorite quote?

My newest favorite quote is from Eugene Peterson, a pastor/theologian I greatly admire. He said, "The pastor's primary responsibility is to keep the community attentive to God." That really helps put things into perspective for me.

What is your favorite balloon creation?

Miss Balloon Heart’s 9-foot Goliath!
